Beginner Yoga in Marrickville

Your first yoga class, without the performance

Hut Yoga Marrickville offers small, friendly yoga classes at Hut 44 on Addison Road. If you have never been on a mat, or you have not been for years, you can start here.

Never done yoga before?

Most people who walk into Hut 44 for the first time are not regulars somewhere else. They live nearby, they have been meaning to try a class, and they would rather not join a room that already looks like it knows what it is doing.

Frank Pineiro teaches every class. The groups stay small on purpose. You will be shown where to stand, and you can copy the person next to you. If a pose has a name you have never heard, Frank will just describe what to do with your feet.

You don't need to be flexible

People say this because they are worried they will be the stiff one in the room. You will not be. A lot of students come from desks, school runs, cycling and walking the Inner West hills. Tight hamstrings are ordinary here.

Every class is marked all levels. You can bend your knees, use a wall, skip a balance, or lie down. Flexibility is something the practice can give you later. It is not what you bring on day one.

Which Hut Yoga class should I start with?

If you want the easiest first hour, book one of these three. They are still real classes. They just leave you more time, and they do not assume you already know a sun salutation.

Monday 9.30am

Slow Flow

The clearest first class. Breath-led standing and floor work, with time to find your footing.

Wednesday 7.15pm

Yin

Mostly on the floor. Long quiet holds for hips and spine. A gentle way to close a work day.

Saturday 8.00am

Morning Flow

A friendly weekend start. Clear cueing, and you are done in time for breakfast.

Monday 12.00pm Flow to Yin is another kind start: a short standing sequence, then floor holds. Wednesday 6.00pm Vinyasa and Saturday 9.15am Vinyasa Flow are open to first-timers too, if you already like to move and want a warmer hour. The full timetable shows every class in the week.

What happens during your first class?

Come about ten minutes early. Frank can point out the bathrooms, where shoes go, and a spot for your mat. Class runs for an hour. You will be invited to rest in child’s pose or lie down any time the pace is enough. At the end there is a quiet rest. Then you roll up your mat and leave.

What should I wear?

Anything you can sit, bend and reach in. Leggings or shorts and a t-shirt are plenty. Bare feet. Leave the jeans and the slippery socks. You do not need to buy yoga clothes for one class.

Do I need a mat?

Yes. Bring your own yoga mat. Props in the room are limited, so if you have a blanket, bring that too, especially for yin and the floor half of Flow to Yin. A bottle of water is useful. That is the whole kit.

The first visit is mostly about finding the hut. Directions to Hut 44 are on the contact page, including parking and the walk to the back of the grounds.

Meet Frank

Frank Pineiro is the teacher in the room. He cues in plain language, offers a slower option, and would rather you leave feeling looked after than impressive. If you are unsure which class to book, tell him it is your first one when you arrive. He will place you where you can see, and he will not put you in the front unless you want to be there.

There is one voice in the timetable for now. That is deliberate. You will not meet a different teacher every week while you are still learning the room.
