Yin Yoga in Marrickville

An hour on the floor when your week has been loud

Join our Yin Yoga class in Marrickville every Wednesday at 7.15pm at Hut 44, Addison Road Community Centre. We also include longer Yin holds in our Monday Flow to Yin class. Both classes are suitable for beginners and experienced students.

What is yin yoga?

Yin is the opposite of rushing. You come down to the mat, settle into a shape, and stay there while the body softens. Hips, lower back, inner thighs and shoulders get time they rarely get at a desk or on a bike ride through the Inner West.

Yin yoga is not a moving practice in the way a flow class is. We turn the senses inward, listen and pay attention. Rather than trying to achieve a pose, we observe the breath, physical sensations and thoughts as they change.

That inward attention makes Yin a mindfulness practice. It shares common ground with meditation and Yoga Nidra: less doing, more noticing. Meditation invites us to observe experience in stillness, while Yoga Nidra is a guided practice usually taken lying down. In Yin, the held poses become the place where attention settles.

Full Yin class description

Who yin is for

Stiff hips, busy minds, and anyone who needs a slower evening. Students come from Marrickville, Dulwich Hill, Stanmore, Petersham and Enmore when they want stillness without leaving the neighbourhood.

Yin is not a lesser class. It is a different kind of work: quiet, patient, and surprisingly deep once you stop trying to keep up.

About Flow to Yin

Wednesday evenings pair well: 6.00pm Vinyasa, then 7.15pm Yin. Come for one or stay for both. See the full timetable.

Yin or flow: which to book?

Choose yin when you want rest, depth in the hips, or a class that does not ask you to memorise sequences. Choose Slow Flow or Vinyasa when you want more standing movement and heat.

Flow to Yin on Monday is the bridge: simple standing work, then the floor. It is a good way in if pure yin feels unknown but you like the idea of long holds.

What happens in yin class?

Arrive a few minutes early. Most of the hour is on the floor. Frank names a target area (hips, spine, side body) and you settle in. Holds are long enough to feel something shift. The room stays calm. You can always come out of a pose.

What to wear and bring

Soft clothes you can sit in. Layers help because the body cools when you stay still. Bring your mat and a blanket. Water is enough; you will not be moving fast.

First time at Hut 44?

Yin is a kind first class. Tell Frank you are new when you arrive. Finding the hut takes a minute the first visit; after that it is straightforward.

Directions to Hut 44 are on the contact page. Hut 44, Addison Road Community Centre, 142 Addison Road, Marrickville NSW 2204. The Bush Music Club hut is at the back of the Addison Road grounds.

Taught by Frank Pineiro

Frank keeps yin cueing simple: where to place knees, how to use a blanket, when to back off. You are not left in silence wondering if you are doing it wrong. If a shape is too much, there is always another option.

Yin Yoga questions

Is Yin Yoga suitable for beginners?

Yes. Most of the class is floor-based, and Frank offers options for each pose. You do not need yoga experience or vocabulary.

Do I need to be flexible for Yin Yoga?

No. Flexibility is not a prerequisite. You settle into a version of each shape that works for your body and can come out whenever you need to.

How long are poses held in Yin Yoga?

Usually several minutes, depending on the pose and the class. The stillness gives you time to listen, pay attention and observe what is happening.

When is Yin Yoga at Hut Yoga Marrickville?
